4 Tips to Prevent Slip and Fall Injuries
From slipping on an icy sidewalk in a housing complex, or tripping over cluttered walkways in a retail store, slip and fall accidents happen on a regular basis. While many people are not seriously injured due to these mishaps, thousands of individuals will need medical attention each year for more serious harm. Even something as simple as a grease spot on a linoleum floor can lead to injuries such as head trauma/concussions, sprained ankles, broken wrists, slipped discs, and many more. When these injuries occur on someone else’s property, and because of someone else’s negligence, the victim may be eligible to file a lawsuit to recover damages.
However, prevention is always key! You can take steps to stay safe and protect yourself from devastating injury. Here are a few tips to keep in mind to reduce your risk of a slip and fall accident:
Wear Proper Footwear
No matter where you’re headed, make sure you are prepared with the right shoes for the location and the weather. Find shoes that fit properly and are in good shape- no broken heels, detached uppers, or frayed laces. If it’s snowy or wet outside, make sure your soles have adequate traction.
Follow the Signage
Property owners and managers are required to provide signage for any potential hazards on the walkways and other pedestrian areas. Look for signs that indicate wet areas or spills, ice, broken glass, chemical leaks, and anything else that might be dangerous, and steer clear of these areas.
Look for Lighting
Sometimes, poor lighting can lead to a slip and fall injury in San Diego (e.g. dark parking lots, dim stockrooms), so be on the lookout for areas that aren’t well-lit. Report and/or fix broken lights when possible, supplement with additional portable lighting, and/or avoid darkened areas if you can.
Stay Alert
There are a lot of gray areas when it comes to premises liability and personal injury, so air on the side of caution whenever possible. Don’t attempt to navigate hazardous areas while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, put down your phone and watch where you’re walking, and if you require assistance (e.g. canes, walkers, mobility devices), make sure you have what you need with you before you go out.
